Welcome to the “alpha” summer project of Campus Crusade for Christ! We are excited to get to know you and minister alongside you this summer. Please take some time to read the information here very carefully, as it will answer most of your questions about the project.
All of the forms and information you need are located on this website. Please be sure to click on EVERY link under Important Documents and read through them carefully!
What is the summer going to include?
We want to assure you that you are going to grow more than ever before, even if you are very mature already. You will also spend the summer with people who will become more dear to you than you can imagine. As a result of this summer, your personal walk with Christ will become deeper, richer, and more intimate. Remember, all of this is to build you as a Christ-centered laborer. We expect you to be fully involved in ministry on campus once the summer is over and you go back to school.
We suggest that you sit down with the leadership in your Campus Crusade movement and find out what areas you might learn or grow in, and what would most help your campus movement next year. If you are on a campus with no CCC staff, talk with the other students involved in (or interested in) ministry on your campus and come to the project with a list of your ideas and areas you wish to develop. Think of this summer as the “calisthenics” and going back to campus as the “game.”
The schedule will be very demanding, but incredibly rewarding and developmental for you. Some things you can expect are:
- Solid teaching from the scriptures
- Rich times of prayer
- Opportunities for small group interaction
- Getting an increased vision for the world
- Outstanding training in ministry philosophy and skills
- Leadership training
- Weekly outreaches
- Rich fun times as a family in Christ
- Men’s and women’s development times
- Practical training in communicating your faith
- Many opportunities for evangelism
- Personal discipleship with personal attention from your staff developer
- Character growth
- Spiritual disciplines of solitude, silence and reflection on scripture.
- Fun! We live only a couple blocks from the beach!
We are very excited about and greatly anticipating the time the Lord has for us together this summer. We will be sharing Jesus Christ on the boardwalk, beaches and in the community, being discipled in small groups and teaching meetings, and having a great time doing it all! We won’t pull any punches, the schedule is full and demanding. You will be challenged in your use of time. The summer will be rewarding and exciting, but it is not a big vacation. You will be expected to be fully available, and you will be given various responsibilities.
Who is leading this project?
The Staff Directors for this year’s project are: Bob and Jill Fuhs who are on staff in Los Angeles, CA, Kim Johnson from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, Nate and Lori Johnson from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, Ryan and April Berg from the University of Cincinnati, and Adam and Alicia Penning from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
This team will be joined by about 25 other Campus Crusade for Christ staff from around the nation.
Arrival dates
If you go to a school on the semester system, you must arrive in Ocean City on Tuesday, May 31st no later than 9p.m. That night we will have a “welcome meeting” at approximately 9 p.m. Unless you have been given prior permission, please do not arrive earlier than May 31st. All students coming from a semester school are expected to arrive on that date unless you have received permission to come earlier or later.
Our first few days together will serve as an orientation to life on project. You will not be able to start your job until Monday, June 6th. The orientation gives us a chance to get to know everyone better as well as get the project house ready.
If you are from a school on the quarter system, we will have two additional orientations for quarter students. The first of these will begin June 4th and the second on June 11th. We expect you to arrive as soon as possible after your last final (even if it is earlier than those dates) and begin orientation when it starts. You need to arrive no later than those dates. If that means taking a red-eye flight, then that is what we expect you to do. You will not regret coming to project as soon as you can as it will allow you to get to know the staff and students and adjust to life on project more quickly.
If you need to leave the project for a weekend during the summer (family member’s wedding, family reunion, etc.) this needs to be okayed by Bob or Kim BEFORE you arrive on the project. Please be aware: we only allow this in very few circumstances. We will not allow you to leave for any reason unless you have prior permission.
Ending dates
Semester students will be allowed to leave anytime on Saturday, August 13th. You are not allowed to leave project early (there will be no exceptions to this!). Quarter students will stay another week and leave on Saturday, August 20th. Please note: Semester students may stay until August 20th if they wish.
Why two different ending dates?
Since quarter students come later than semester students, we want them to get the full “project experience” as well as have more opportunities to work and minister on Ocean City. About half of the project will be students from quarter schools.
Housing, Meals and Expenses
Most students will live in a large hotel that was bought for the exclusive use of the project in 1995. We are not able to house all students in the hotel (known as the Ambassador Inn), so some students will live in another property just a block away from the Ambassador’s Inn.
The project will provide dinner and breakfast 5 days a week, served at the Ambassador Inn. Meals are prepared in our large, industrial kitchen by 2 students who are hired by the project to cook (please let us know if you would be interested in being hired as one of the project cooks for the summer).
The total cost for this summer is $3150. This includes housing, meals, materials, and all project activities. Transportation to and from Ocean City is not included in that amount.
You will want to bring some extra spending money for the first two weeks until you get your first paycheck (approximately $100). Some meals will be provided during orientation, but some will not be, so you will need some extra cash. ATM’s are plentiful in Ocean City, if you need one.
Your mailing address for the summer will be:
You Name
1301 Central Avenue
Ocean City, NJ 08226
What to Bring
Space will be very limited this summer! Pack as lightly as you can. You will have at most 2 drawers and 10 inches of closet space for your things this summer. Pack in a suitcase or duffel that can easily be stored underneath your bed.
Here’s a list of what you will need this summer:
Bible and notebook
Any discipleship materials you have (will come in handy after the staff leave)
A car would be greatly helpful! If you are able to drive, please do. While most jobs are within walking distance from the Ambassador’s Inn, Ocean City itself is an island and you might want to get away occasionally. If you are not able to drive, you will be fine, though.
Two bath towels, one beach towel, washcloths, bedding for a twin bed, pillow, blanket and mattress pad. (We only provide the mattress. If you are flying, you might consider shipping some items out to you beforehand.)
Softball glove (we play a staff vs. student game this summer), sports equipment and clothes for sports (basketball, running, softball, etc…)
Guitar or other musical instruments that you can play.
A suitcase or duffel bag that you can store under your bed.
Summer casual clothes, and rain gear. Temps can be cool for the first couple weeks (60’s) and then it’s mostly in the 70’s and 80’s (hopefully!). Please be conservative in your choice of clothing to bring. If it is questionable, please leave it at home. We want to create a safe environment on the project for everyone, not causing our brothers and sisters to stumble.
Swim attire. Be conservative in your choice of swimwear! Again, we want to honor one another and the Lord with our dress. If it is questionable, leave it at home.
At least one article of clothing with your school insignia (sweatshirt, t-shirt, etc..)
Light jacket.
Clothes you can get dirty in. We’ll spend some time working on the house when you arrive and it might include painting.
Church clothes. The entire project attends the Ocean City Baptist Church (the church that actually started the project!). Dress on Sundays ranges from “dress casual” to “dressy.” For men that means no jeans, no flip-flops and a nice shirt, and for women: skirts, dresses or nice slacks. Think: conservative.
An alarm clock (so you won’t be late for work!)
You may bring a bike if you want to. Bring a lock as well for it. We have bike storage space under the porch of the Inn.
For your job this summer: You will need to bring your social security card and your driver’s license, or a copy of your birth certificate. You will need this to verify employment eligibility!
You may bring a laptop computer if you wish. We will have internet access in the project house. There is also free wireless at the nearby public library.
Do not bring your dog, cat, bird or any other kind of pet! There is no room for pets of any kind! Do not bring any candles or appliances (microwave, air-conditioner, etc…) as they are a fire hazard and use too much electricity. Do not bring any large electronics (stereos, desk top computers, etc…). Please contact us if you have a question about bringing a certain item.
Again, we need to warn you: space is limited! You will have at most two drawers in which to put your stuff, and 10 inches of closet space for hanging clothes. Pack light!
Jobs & Employment Information
Every student on the project is required to have a job. Your work place will be not only a source of financial gain, but a wonderful place to share Christ’s love. This summer will be a great opportunity to learn from real world experience what ministry looks like in the work world. In fact, we refer to your work place as your “ministry site.”
Please look at the list of past project jobs posted on the web site or included with this information. Reading this list is a must before applying for any of these positions. You may wish to write or call one of these employers if you see a job which you particularly like. Remember, these are by no means all the jobs available. You might also try looking at an Ocean City, NJ phone book at your local library or online, and begin contacting potential places of employment.
Job tip: If you are interested in working at McDonald’s (one of the bigger project employers), it is recommended that you get a job at your local McD’s and then transfer your employment to OC for the summer. You can also apply on line at McState.com and entering the zip code 08226. The local manager tells people that they need to put on the application that they are willing to start anytime in the morning in order to increase chances of being hired.
Before accepting a new job not on the list prior to project, you must get approval from Bob Fuhs or Kim Johnson.
There are always new jobs not on the list that open up each year. Every summer we have employers come to our door looking for our students because of our great reputation. We encourage you to aggressively look for a job in the power of the Holy Spirit and then leave the results to God! When you talk to employers, mention that you are with Campus Crusade for Christ, and let them know that you will be there all summer.
Job Requirements
Your job must leave you adequate time for project functions. Your work hours may go no later than 5:00 p.m., and you must be home each day by 5:15 p.m. to leave you ample time to eat dinner and be at a meeting at 6:30 or 7:00 p.m. Three or four times during the summer we have special activities that start at 5:30 p.m.
Also, we ask you to work no more than 40 hours per week and no more than five days per week, so that you won’t be too tired to participate in project functions. The best work schedule is 32 - 40 hours in five days per week. Try to secure this schedule if at all possible. If you do not need to work more than 32 hours a week, we suggest you limit your work hours to that if possible.
Again: You may not work over 40 hours per week, after 5:00 p.m., or on Sundays, and your other day off needs to be something other than Monday or Friday.
Sundays are non-work days because we want you to have some time off and we sometimes do outreaches on Sunday afternoons. Mondays and Fridays should be work days because the staff are not available for discipleship on those days, and discipleship appointments are the highest priority on your days off.
Make sure that your prospective employer knows clearly the date you are planning to go back to school. Remember, you offer an employer an honest, hardworking, dependable individual, so with confidence expect a good job. Please be praying for your summer job. God has called you to a particular job this summer, one in which you will have a ministry in the life of your employer and your co-workers. You have a lot to offer your employer, so don’t necessarily settle for the first job you’re offered. Be sure that this is the job you want before accepting.
Be aware: Once you accept a job, you will not be allowed to quit! This has helped CCC gain tremendous respect in the business community over the summers because we provide consistent and long-term summer help - a rare quality in other employees. You must check with your summer small group leader before accepting any job once on the project. If the job you want is not on the job list and you want to make a decision before the project begins, you must clear that with Bob or Kim.
Most jobs in Ocean City start at about $7.50 per hour and go up from there.
If you arrive to project with the semester students, your first day available for work is Monday June 6th. We will spend the first week in orientation, getting settled, and special events. If your orientation week begins on June 4th, then your first possible day to work is Friday, June 10. If your orientation week begins on June 11th, then your first possible day to work will be Friday, June 17th.
Want To Work For The Project?
To help the project run smoothly, we will be hiring for a few positions. They are:
Project Cooks: We will be hiring two students to be the cooks for the project as a summer job. It pays approx. $7.50 per hour. This job is 40 hours a week, 5 days a week. If you have any interest, please email Bob.Fuhs”at”uscm.org (only use the @ symbol). Requirements include: ability to handle stress, organization, love of food, ability to cook, self-motivator. Experience preferred but not necessary.
Maintenance worker: We will hire one student to work on the project housing doing some repairs and routine maintenance and cleaning. This student should have maintenance experience and be able to work well on their own. Jobs will include painting, clearing clogged pipes, landscaping, and minor repairs. This job pays approximately $7.50 an hour for 10-15 hours a week. Please email Bob.Fuhs”at”uscm.org if you are interested. Requirements: previous maintenance experience, ability to work alone, self-starter.
Childcare workers: We will need four female students to help with childcare for the staff kids. We would like to hire three students to help during staff orientation from May 24th to May 31st, as well as students who would like to help with child care part time during the rest of the summer until the staff leave on July 15th.
If you are interested in helping with this, please email Lori.Johnson”at”uscm.org (only use the @ symbol). These jobs will pay about $7.50 an hour.
Travel information
Please note: if you are driving to Ocean City, you will experience toll roads. Have some change and/ or cash handy. Also, it is illegal to talk on your cell phone while driving in New Jersey. If you must, use a hands-free device. Be aware too that all gas in New Jersey is full-service. Just pull up to the pump and say, “Fill ‘er up!”
If you are flying in, see if you can get a flight into Atlantic City first (ACY). There are limited flights into ACY, but it’s only about 15 minutes from the project. Philadelphia (PHL) is about one hour away from OC and the next best alternative. Newark, New York and Baltimore airports are too far away for us to be able to pick you up. If you choose to fly into Newark, New York or Baltimore, you are on your own to get to the project. As soon as you know your flight information, email it to Bryce.Veldkamp@uscm.org.
If you fly into Philadelphia, you can either make your own way to Ocean City (some have taken the train to Atlantic City then taken a bus or cab from there) or wait for us to pick you up. We will send some vans to pick people up at the Philadelphia airport at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31st (see below for pickup times for quarter students). Hopefully we will have connected via cell phone to arrange the pick up, but if you get stuck, we will pick you up outside baggage claim D. This will be our only airport pickup time. If you get in earlier, you can either sit and wait or arrange another way to get to OC. If you fly in to Atlantic City, we can pick you up anytime before 8 p.m. Atlantic City airport is small, so we’ll just meet you outside the baggage claim.
For those flying in from schools ending later, here are the airport pickup times:
Saturday, June 4th @ 3 p.m.
Saturday, June 11th @ 3 p.m.
If you wish to be picked up at one of these times, you must email Nathan Johnson at least a week prior to your arrival!
(Nathan.Johnson"@"uscm.org)
If you arrive during one of these times, and have reserved a spot in the van, meet outside Baggage Claim D at the Philadelphia airport. Someone will greet you there with a smile and a sign indicating that he or she is with the Ocean City summer project. We will then load some vans and drive together to the project.
If you are from a quarter school, you must arrive as soon as possible after your last final, even if it is earlier than June 4th or June 11th. Let us know your flight plans and we will do our best to arrange a ride from the airport if you fly into Philadelphia.
Taking the train from Philadelphia to Atlantic City:
If you want to take the train from Philadelphia to Atlantic City, here is how: Take the train that leaves from the airport (below the walkway on your way to get your bags) to the 30th Street substation in Phildelphia. Then go to the Amtrak train window and order a ticket for Atlantic City. From the time you get your bags in Philly to the train station in Atlantic City is a little over 2 hours. We can pick you up at the train station in Atlantic City, but please inform us at least a week ahead of time.
The Ocean City Facebook Page is a good way to coordinate travel plans with other students who are coming. If you want to bring a car, you can be assured that there will be plenty of individuals interested in traveling out with you and splitting the expenses.
Again, as soon as you know your travel arrangements, please submit it on the web form (even if you are driving or riding with someone please let us know your travel plans).
Support Raising
As this is a ministry project, you are allowed to raise all of the funds you will need for your ministry this summer, if you so choose. You should have already received information from Campus Crusade to help you begin the fund raising process. In addition to the project fee of $3150, you can raise extra funds to cover transportation and other project related expenses (e.g.:meals not served at the house, support-raising expenses, etc…) You must bring all receipts with you to the project so that you can be reimbursed from the extra support that you raise. If you do not have a receipt, we cannot reimburse you from extra support you have raised. This is an IRS requirement.
If you have the opportunity to raise over and above what you personally need, that support will go to help other students who still have a need. Do not promise any extra support you raise to another student or another project. Remember that all support is tax-deductible only when the checks are made payable to “Campus Crusade for Christ.”
How to Handle Support Checks
Make 2 copies of all support checks. This is in case something gets lost in the mail. You keep one copy, and send the other, along with the checks to Bryce Veldkamp:
Bryce Veldkamp
1625 Cliffs Landing
APT 102D
Ypsilanti, MI 48198-7307
By April 30, you must have mailed in at least $1000.
DO NOT mail any checks after April 30! Bring any support checks you have with you to Ocean City after April 30th.
We are all looking forward to working with you and getting to know you personally this summer.
